What's the current state of your home country?

Soy de Barcelona, España, pero llevo más de cuatro años viviendo fuera de Europa (trabajando en Australia y Canadá, y viajando por Asia y América). Me preocupa ver como crece la extrema derecha en Europa, y me consuela, en cierta manera, pensar que en España aún tenemos un gobierno de izquierdas que empuja para algunas políticas progresistas. Aún así nos queda mucho camino, tanto para afrontar la crisis climática como para crear una sociedad más justa donde la diferencia sea celebrada. Además, una de las razones por las cuales decidí irme fue por la bajada del poder adquisitivo de la clase trabajadora, sintiéndonos cada vez más con dificultades para llegar a final de mes sin hacer malabares. Cada vez la riqueza se acumula en unas pocas personas, y la población se está empobreciendo.

A pesar de que sigo lo que ocurre en mi país de origen, cada vez veo más el planeta como un sistema interconectado (e interdependiente), donde lo que ocurre en un lugar nos afecta física, social y energéticamente a todas las personas del planeta. El planeta es mi hogar. Cada vez creo menos en la idea de nación, pienso que todas las personas habitamos el mismo planeta y tenemos que aunar fuerzas para que todas podamos florecer en nuestra potencial.

I am from Barcelona, Spain, but I have been living outside of Europe for over four years (working in Australia and Canada and traveling through Asia and America). I am concerned to see the rise of the far-right in Europe, and it comforts me, in a way, to think that in Spain, we still have a left-wing government pushing for some progressive policies. However, we still have a long way to go, both in addressing the climate crisis and in creating a fairer society where differences are celebrated. Moreover, one of the reasons why I decided to leave was due to the decrease in the buying power of the working class, feeling increasingly challenged to make ends meet. Wealth is accumulating in the hands of a few, and the population is becoming impoverished.

Even though I keep up with what is happening in my country of origin, I increasingly see the planet as an interconnected (and interdependent) system, where what happens in one place affects all people on the planet physically, socially, and energetically. The planet is my home. I believe less and less in the idea of nation; I think that all people inhabit the same planet, and we need to come together to ensure that everyone can flourish to their full potential.

What brought you to us?

Quería una experiencia alejada de hacer simplemente turismo en un lugar. Llevaba viajando casi dos meses por Norte América con mi pareja, a un ritmo bastante rápido. Decidí hacer un viaje sola por un mes y escogí Costa Rica, ya que oí que era un país seguro como mujer viajando sola. Quería conocerlo desde otra mirada, la mirada local, y así relacionarme con sus gentes desde la horizontalidad. Me interesaba entender sus peculiaridades desde la lentitud de quedarte en el mismo lugar más de un par de días, hacer lo que sus gentes hacen y descubrir un lugar menos turístico. Hacía tiempo quería probar workaway, y me aventuré a buscar opciones mientras viajaba sola para probarme a mi misma y vivir la experiencia que anhelaba. Así llegué a Finca Mālama.

I wanted an experience away from just being a tourist in a place. I had been traveling for almost two months around North America with my partner, at a fairly fast pace. I decided to take a solo trip for a month and chose Costa Rica, as I had heard it was a safe country for a woman traveling solo. I wanted to experience it from a different perspective, the local perspective, and connect with its people on a more equal level. I was interested in understanding its peculiarities by staying in one place for more than a couple of days, doing what the locals do, and discovering a less touristy side of the country. I had been wanting to try Workaway for a while, and I ventured to look for options while traveling alone to challenge myself and live the experience I longed for. That's how I ended up at Finca Mālama.

What did you learn here?

Durante mis dos semanas en Finca Mālama, he podido abrirme a nuevas interacciones para entender, desafiar y ampliar mi visión del mundo. He participado activamente dentro la comunidad creada por Colin y Tiffany, mano a mano con las personas voluntarias y trabajadores. Me he enriquecido enormemente con esas interacciones, especialmente con Jose. Jose es un hombre tico que trabaja tres días a la semana cuidando Finca Mālama con una pasión extraordinaria. Adora la tierra y sabe cómo cuidarla. Se denomina a el mismo productor de alimentos, pero yo diría que es un artista de la permacultura y un arquitecto de la naturaleza. No hay palabras para describir cuánto sabe y la cantidad de recursos que tiene. Ve potencialidad en todo. Te contagia con su positivismo. He disfrutado mucho conversando con él, intercambiando historias y reflexiones sobre nuestras experiencias de vida.

During my two weeks at Finca Mālama, I have been able to open myself to new interactions to understand, challenge, and broaden my worldview. I actively participated in the community created by Colin and Tiffany, working alongside volunteers and workers. I have immensely enriched myself through these interactions, especially with Jose. Jose is a 'tico' man who works three days a week caring for Finca Mālama with extraordinary passion. He loves the land and knows how to care for it. He calls himself a food producer, but I would say he is a permaculture artist and an architect of nature. There are no words to describe how much he knows and the abundance of resources he has. He sees potential in everything and shares it with you through his positivity. I have enjoyed my conversations with him, exchanging stories, and reflections about our life experiences.
